Points are scored in the following ways. |
Goal kick ( 3 points) |
By kicking the ball between the uprights and above the crossbar. The ball is stationary on the ground and is kicked at the point of the opposing team's infraction. |
Drop goal (3 points) |
By dropping the ball to the ground first, and then kicking it through the uprights. For the kick to count, the ball must touch the ground immediately before the kick. A drop goal is always kicked during play - and often on the run.

Try (5 points) |
By pressing the ball on the ground in the opponent's try-area -- the equivalent of a football team's end zone. No points are scored if downward pressure is not applied to the ball on the ground. While a football touchdown can be scored without the ball ever touching the ground in the end zone, a rugby try is never awarded if the ball does not touch the ground. |

Convert (2 points) |
By kicking the ball between the uprights and above the crossbar after a try is scored. A convert can be kicked from any distance away from the goal line but must be directly in front of the point where the ball was touched down to score the try, and the opposing team can attempt to block the kick. |
