The Kent County high school girl’s rugby league welcomes a new entrant this year – from outside the county. Belle River District High School will join the league this year too compete against Chatham-Kent, Blenheim and John McGregor. The Belle River team played several exhibition games last year against the Kent County schools and sought permission to join the league at the end of the season.
The four teams will play a home-and-home 2008 schedule beginning on April 30th when Blenheim visits McGregor and Belle River travels to Chatham-Kent. Regular season play will conclude on May 30th. The two top teams will play in the championship game on Friday, June 13th.
The championship game should be a first for a high school competition as it will be the curtain raiser for the Canada Selects and England Counties international game being played later that night. Both games will be played at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex behind Chatham-Kent Secondary School. The girl’s championship will kick-off at 3:30 pm and the international game will kick-off at 6:30 pm.

| Kent high school rugby coaches attend coaches training session | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
High school rugby coaches from John McGregor S.S., Blenheim District High School, and Chatham-Kent Secondary School participated in a rugby coaching clinic held during February in Chatham. The two-day clinic, held at CKSS, provided introductory competitive training for local coaches and is the first step towards preparing the coaches for achieving formal coaching certification. Fourteen people participated in the classroom and practical sessions, learning how to plan and deliver effective practices. Participants included players and coaches from Sarnia, Stratford, and Petrolia as well as nine Kent Havoc Rugby Football club members. Most of the local participants are actively involved in coaching high school girl’s rugby in the three Kent County.high schools and coaches from all three schools attended the clinic. An opportunity to get formal certification for these coaches will come later this year. The coaches will be expected to develop and implement a practise plan; the practise will be evaluated by a certified coach from the Ontario Rugby Union. Hosted by the Kent Havoc Club, the training weekend was sponsored by the Ontario Rugby Union and was conducted by Jill Zonneveld -- a former Alberta provincial team player and a former board member of Rugby Canada. The curriculum covered ethics in coaching, coaching principles, player safety, practice planning, analyzing performance and providing feedback to players. The Kent Havoc Club is committed to providing
high quality coaching to local high schools as well as to its own club
members. As such, it is planning on sending more club members for additional
coaching training when it becomes available. |
