Kent Havoc vs. Norfolk Harvester
Exhibition Game Recap – May 15th, 2010
Kent Havoc travelled to Norfolk County to take on the Norfolk Harvesters in their final exhibition game of the season. With many team veterans not able to make the trip, Kent travelled light, dressing only 20 players in this game -- many of whom were first year players. In an attempt to fire his team up, Captain Mike Lindsay reminded the players that Havoc had never won a game in Norfolk County. Tyler Gawley must have been listening.
Games versus Norfolk County have always been a test of toughness with their forward based power game. This match started out no differently. With neither team willing to back down from their traditional game plans, Kent managed to take an early 6-0 lead off Craig Arnell’s two penalty kicks. Norfolk’s players responded quickly, refusing to yield and eventually taking control of the match by scoring a hard earned try and taking a 7-6 lead into half. Again Kent seemed to have come to Norfolk County only to allow the home team to dictate the game’s pace.
Another quick try by the home team knocked Havoc players back on their heels as some players began feeling that another opportunity had been lost in Norfolk. It was at this point that veteran team leader, Matt Piatek, decided take control and motivate his troops. Gathering his team in a circle during the conversion kick Piatek let every player know what he expected from everyone for the rest of the game. He then dictated the pace of the game with his hard-nosed play on the field. The final 30 minutes belonged to Kent.
Havoc began to gain ground on every attack, maintaining ball possession and forcing the Harvesters to play their best when it counted most. Eventually Kent moved the ball out wide where Tyler Gawley was able to make a hard cut to the outside, breaking one tackle and eventually passing back inside to set up the longest try of the day. Gawley didn’t stop there as he ran support on the next drive scooping up a bouncing ball and diving in for the game winning try (also Tyler’s 1st Havoc try). This play started when Matt Piatek kicked a loose ball down field after some great hustle. Overall effort from team newcomers made a big difference in the outcome of the game as this year’s rookie crop is starting to make an impact on the field.
Next up for Havoc is their season and home opener versus Bruce County.
Try Scorers – Matt Waddick (2), Tyler Gawley (1)
Penalty Kicks – Craig Arnell 2-4, Matt Piatek 0-1
Man of the Match –Kieran Collins
